When you are cooking lentils all you need to remember is, for every person you are serving you will need ¼ cup of lentils. So for a family of 4 you will need 1 cup of lentils to a ratio of 2 cups of water to add to your instant pot/pressure cooker. If you are cooking 1 cup of lentils on a stove, then you will need 4 cups of water. For this recipe I am cooking my lentils on a stove.
Ingredients
1 Cup of moong /mung lentils (washed and drained)
4 Cups of boiled water
1 Jar of AARAYNA’S Lentils Tarka Masala
Directions
Cooking on a hob/stove
- Sift through the lentils to discard any small stones or debris. Make sure you wash the lentils thoroughly a few times or until the water runs clear. Soak your lentils in water for 15 minutes before cooking them, however, this is completely optional.
- Add the water to the deep saucepan and boil.
- Once boiled, add your washed lentils to the saucepan. I leave the lid off of the pan whilst cooking my lentils, in the first instance. Allow the lentils to cook on a high heat for about 12 minutes.
- Pour the contents of your tarka masala into the saucepan and give it a good stir. Place the lid on the pan.
- Turn the cooker onto a medium heat and let the lentils simmer for a further 8-10 minutes (allowing the flavours to infuse) or until the lentils are cooked. (Use a spoon and take a few lentils from the pot, rub them between your fingers, if the lentils split with ease, the lentils are cooked. If at this stage there is excess water in the saucepan you can remove it with a ladle.
- Once the lentils are cooked, remove them from the heat and serve.
(Optional) Garnish with fresh coriander - Directions
Cooking in a pressure cooker - Sift through the lentils to discard any small stones or debris. Make sure you wash the lentils thoroughly a few times or until the water runs clear. Soak your lentils in water for 15 minutes before cooking them, however, this is completely optional.
- Add the correct amount of water to the pressure cooker, in accordance to your booklet (for a recipe of 4 people).
- Add your washed lentils to the pressure cooker.
- Place the lid on the pressure cooker, set the timer and turn on the heat.
- Wait for the pressure cooker to indicate that your set programme is complete. Turn off the heat. Do not release the pressure from the pressure cooker immediately. Allow it to sit for about 5/10 minutes or until the lid unlocks itself.
- Once it is safe you can remove the lid. To test if the lentils are cooked – use a spoon and take a few lentils from the pot, rub them between your fingers, if the lentils split with ease, the lentils are cooked. If at this stage there is excess water sitting on top of the lentils in the pressure cooker, you can remove it with a ladle.
- Take your jar of AARAYNA’S Lentils Tarka Masala and pour the contents of the jar into the pressure cooker and heat for approximately 5-10 minutes (on a medium heat) stirring occasionally or until the flavours are infused.
- Turn off the heat and serve.
Optional – Garnish with fresh coriander
